The opening of Eastern European markets following the political events of the 1990s allowed Astaldi Group to successfully launch its activities in Romania in the transport infrastructure sector, becoming one of the key players in this area. It has completed numerous works including the Bucharest-Constanta motorway and modernisation of the Henri Coanda International Airport (formerly Otopeni Airport) in Bucharest which was carried out in two stages.
A third stage of the modernisation project is currently being carried out and said contract is in addition to the other contracts related to two passenger terminals under construction at Cluj Napoca Airport, the Arad-Timisoara motorway, the Pitesti motorway bypass, modernisation of the Bucharest-Constanta railway line and an urban viaduct with motorway features in Bucharest. Still with regard to the capital, Astaldi is also working on construction of a modern sports facility the “Lia Manoliu” National Stadium.
